polis award | 1st place for the AGGLOlac digital twin

Our experience has shown that plans and physical models would not suffice to communicate this once-in-a-generation project. The surrounding community and all other stakeholders needed to be effectively involved throughout the entire process. Particularly non-technical people should be able to experience how a new living space emerges on this prime lake front site. This was the only way for everyone to comprehensively understand just how special this future district will be.

Virtual immersion

The interactive 3D digital twin is based on the latest gaming technology and allows you to virtually dive into the future lake district with the ability to move around on your own terms to experience the project today. The project area consists of a park adjacent to the lake, a marina, and the various proposed buildings. Whilst the project area is 3D modelled, the existing surrounding environment has been integrated into the model using detailed photogrammetry data. Depending on the situation, the user can choose between various options: from fully interactive exploration to guided tours.

Video presentation of the winning project

Everyone can easily navigate through the virtual environment with a keyboard and mouse, or with a gaming controller. The entire model can be navigated in real time. Even inexperienced users can appreciate the planned lake district through intuitively designed user interfaces. And of course, the entire model is also VR ready. With this popular experience, the viewer immerses him or herself and moves through the virtual environment with a true sense of scale and presence. Interested parties can, for example, immerse themselves in the future project at trade fairs and events. In this way, members of the community are directly involved, communication and the feedback process are made easier.

Community Consultation Event

The jury is convinced that this 3D interactive digital twin can generate trust, understanding and identification with this once-in-a-generation project among the public and investors alike. The digital approach makes it even easier to involve the various stakeholder groups.

Internally, the virtual environment is utilised as a design tool to verify planning, discuss optimizations, and make informed decisions. For example, you can use the built-in measurement tools to measure directly within the model, since the digital 3D twin is true to scale and spatially accurate. The project and its surroundings can be viewed from every perspective using virtual drone mode. Viewlines can thus be assessed in real time. Integrated tools enable everyone to visually document discussion points and add comments. This accelerates the appropriate communication of suggestions significantly. In addition, high-resolution images can be generated and even videos can be created from any angle. For our team, the new tools have opened up completely new possibilities in planning, communication and in the entire decision-making process.
